A Little Movement Can Go A Long Way*

It’s no secret that exercise is good for your body, but did you know that even just a small amount of daily physical activity can be just as beneficial?
Yes, it’s true. You don’t have to burn hundreds of calories or lift the heaviest weights to experience the benefits of movement.

Here are some suggestions.

  • Turn Off Electronics
But it doesn’t have to be for very long! You don’t have to say goodbye to your electronics for good, just put them on hold for an hour and go on a short walk, play a game of tag with your kids, do some jumping jacks, or put music on and dance like nobody’s watching.

  • More About Walking
You may not be the long-walks-on-the-beach type, and that’s okay! You only need to walk a little bit every day to experience the benefits. Walk your dog, walk on the treadmill for five to ten minutes before work. When you get the mail, take a quick walk around the block. If you listen to music or a podcast, the time will fly by, but you’ll still get the benefits of this small amount of movement.

  • Do Some Chores
Whether you like it or not, you most likely have chores to do throughout the day. You might as well get some basic exercise in there while you can! Rake leaves, plant a garden, clean your home, take your dog to the park--these are all great ways to get stuff done WHILE moving your body. If you live somewhere snowy, shoveling snow is a premium opportunity to accomplish tasks while getting your heartrate up.

  • Pace While You Talk
When you answer the phone, don’t get stuck sitting at your desk for the duration of the call. Use this time to walk around your home or office. Take advantage of this easy opportunity for movement!

Although these ways to fit movement into your life may seem insignificant, they’re not! These are the benefits you’ll reap from incorporating these simple practices into your life:

  • Reduced stress
  • Enhanced self-esteem
  • Improved mood/reduced anxiety and depression
  • Improved Memory
  • Reduced risk of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes

These are SERIOUS benefits and very little work is involved in getting them. There’s no reason to not get going right away. What do you have to lose?
